If your parents were given the opportunity to choose their child and the ability to see into the future, would they have chosen you?

This is the BEST question.  It's hot as hell here, I'm moody & uncomfortable, and this just made me laugh.  Thank you Lyrical.

NO.  My parents wouldn't have chosen any of us.  We were all accidents and an inconvenience.

Figured this would be quite the fun question.

My parents would have skipped me but tolerated my sister because of the grandchildren.   ;-)

My parents weren't thrilled with the two grandchildren they received from my brother.  They really didn't like children and their marriage started out in trouble to start with.  Mom got pregnant, Dad wanted her to abort. She threatened him. His mother threatened him. He was finally trapped, after leaving a few women at the altar.   The saving grace was my grandmother.  She really loved having grandchildren.  Too bad she was crazy.   In case you were wondeing, I take after her.  Inappropriate to the extreme.

Since out of all my siblings, I was the one who stuck around and was the main caregiver in Mom's final years, I think I'd have gotten approval.

Must have been very challenging. I'd imagine it meant a great deal to Mom and to you in terms of having the peace of mind to know you did what felt right to you. Thanks Jane.   :-)

Kudos to you for stepping up to the plate. Health issues with old age make care giving a challenge.
When I was young, I assumed that either my older sister or my oldest step sister would have that role. Now that that time is here, I found out my wife and I have had to fill that role, with no support. And I am the black sheep. They consider me to be in a cult because I am one of Jehovah's Witnesses. If I thought my mom and stepdad (Died a little over a month ago) were being cared for by one of my siblings in a cult, I would have stepped up to the plate. But anyway, although my stepdad disagrees with my religious beliefs, I am the only one that he trusted before he came down with Parkinson's dementia (Very similar to ALZ). (Sorry, a bit much for a comment to an answer)

    I'm sorry about your mother.
    :(

Though I'd choose Neil Patrick Harris every time, regardless!

Are you serious Baba? If so, that's sad. Did a loving couple take you in? I hope so.
(I know I was an accident as well but being left as a baby is unthinkable.) This post was edited by texasescimo at October 4, 2017 7:39 AM MDT

I say that not because there is something wrong with me but because they got divorced before I was one year old.  They probably would have preferred not to have any children at all since their marriage failed.

  • I'm my parents' only child. I'm not the most conventional child they could've had as their only. But the way they feel about me now, yes, I am convinced they would've picked me if given the choice :)
